In memoriam...
Mauricio Cruz Solís
1999 - 2024
Mauricio Cruz Solís, director of the news portal Minuto x Minuto, was murdered in the center of Uruapan, Michoacán.
Around 10 p.m., the 25-year-old journalist conducted a live broadcast in which he interviewed Mayor Carlos Manzo about the early Saturday morning fire that caused total losses for approximately 66 vendors at the Tariácuri market, and discussed the support to be provided for the affected merchants.
Minutes later, Cruz Solís was shot a few meters from the building housing the Casa de la Cultura, near the Municipal Pergola, according to the state prosecutor's report.
In the morning, Emilio Rueda, Uruapan's Secretary of Tourism, blamed local media for creating an image of insecurity in the city.
“What's shown in the news is one thing, but the real perception of insecurity is different. In reality, people feel safer in the municipality. We’ve avoided paying much to the media, and local outlets have been reporting negative events. Bad things happen in all cities, but citizens' perception here is much better,” the official stated.
So far, authorities have not clarified the causes of the market fire.
Over the past eight years, Mauricio Cruz worked as a reporter for ABC de Michoacán and La Opinión de Michoacán, both based in Uruapan.
Currently, he directed the media outlet Minuto x Minuto and hosted the news program Enlace Informativo on the Uruapan radio station Radiorama.
The prosecutor's office is collecting footage from surveillance cameras of various businesses and homes to try to identify those responsible for the crime.
Since 2006, a total of 18 journalists have been murdered or disappeared in Michoacán, with cases that remain unresolved.
